Sterile blender sampling bags pair a wire closure with a sterile interior and filter panel, so labs can homogenise a sample without opening the bag. Most contamination in sample handling comes from the moment someone opens a bag, pours material in, and reseals it. A wire-closure bag removes that moment: the pouch is folded shut, then blended or transported as a closed unit.

What a Wire-Closure Sampling Bag Does

A sterile sampling bag is a pre-sterilised PE pouch used to collect, transport and homogenise a sample in one container. The closure is a fold-over strip with two round wires: fold the top twice, bend the wires down, and the bag stays sealed and standing upright on the bench.

Inside, a filter panel separates liquid from the solid fraction during blending, so pipetting works without fibres blocking the tip. Bags are EO-sterilised before packing and checked for leaks, so a lab can use them straight out of the box.

Where Labs Actually Use Them

Food and beverage microbiology is the largest use: 25 g of product into 225 ml of diluent, blended in the bag, then plated. Water utilities take grab samples from treatment works and distribution mains. Pharmaceutical QC teams collect rinse water and surface swabs for microbial limits testing.

Clinical and veterinary labs use the same bag for tissue and swab transport, where a leak becomes a biohazard. One format covers all four.

How to Use One Without Contaminating It

1. Label the writing area before opening the bag — marker smears on a cold, damp surface.
2. Pull the two wire tabs apart to open; never blow into the bag or rest it face-down.
3. Add the sample, keeping the sample-to-diluent ratio your method specifies.
4. Fold the top over twice, then bend both wires flat against the bag.
5. Blend, or transport upright — the sealed bag stands on its own base.

Common Volumes and Sizes

A bag has to hold the sample, the diluent and enough headspace for the blender paddles to move freely. Sizes run from 60 ml to 1,650 ml in 70, 90 and 100 micron film; every size comes printed or unprinted.

Closure Styles, Sterilisation and Packing

Wire closure is the standard for blender bags; flat or zip closures suit dry sampling and transport but are not built for blending. Sterilisation is EO by default, with gamma irradiation and autoclave cycles available on request — for moist heat processes, biological indicators are specified by ISO 11138-3, so the choice usually follows whichever validation your lab already runs.
